The Inn on the Lake boasts an enormous sense of space, not least because of its own 15 acres of beautifully-tended gardens. Pink roses, neat hedgerows and chequered lawns are the setting for pitch-and-putt golf and croquet, while on the lake, you can enjoy a calm afternoon on a white sailboat (perhaps to a nearby deserted beach). Inside the hotel, the decor is cosy and quintessential, with the mahogany Ramblers Bar serving real ales and the AA Rosette standard Lake View Restaurant dishing up accomplished British cuisine.

After a wholesome day in walking boots, head back and relax in the hot tub and sauna, or sink into an armchair by the window with a classic read.
